Quinta 2013

I would just like to take this opportunity to say what an amazing weekend has been had by all at our church weekend away at Quinta Hall near Oswestry. Everybody that took part has had a wonderful time.

The weekend was blessed with good company, fellowship and fun. We also have taken away a lot to think about and reflect on how we can all use our spiritual gifts.

A big thank you to all those that organised the weekend, and also to Rev Simon Thorburn who gave us all a lot to take away with us.

I’m sure we are all looking forward to our next weekend away in 2015!

Wednesday Bible study group

The Wednesday morning Bible study and fellowship group will be re-starting this Wednesday 17th April.

We will be meeting in the Oasis cafe from 9am for tea and coffee ready to start in the Chapel from 9.40 till 11.15, all are welcome.

“Hot Potato” Lent lunch

There will be a simple baked potato lunch to raise money for the Bishop’s Lent appeal after church next Sunday (3rd March).  During our lunch, Jim will be discussing a ‘hot potato’ issue!  If you haven’t already signed up, please contact Jim to let him know you’d like to attend (we need to know numbers, so we can cater for everyone).

Lent groups

Our Lent groups are a time to learn, reflect and pray together.  This year, they are also an opportunity to help create our “Stations of the Cross” which we are working on as a joint project with Saint Paul’s School. (What are “Stations of the Cross”? – external link to Wikipedia).

If you’ve not signed up to a group yet, don’t worry – you can join any of the groups at any time, even if you’ve missed some weeks (the sessions stand alone).

Monday – 7:30pm at 47 Halesworth Road
Wednesday – 9:30am in the chapel
Wednesday – 7:30pm at the Vicarage
Friday 7:30pm at 11 Talaton Close

Quinta 2013

Our church holds a weekend away every two years, in the beautiful grounds of The Quinta, a Christian centre in Shropshire (about an hour away).  This year’s weekend away will be 19th-21st April.  The title of the weekend is “Living Grace – Receiving and giving”.  Our guest speaker is Reverend Simon Thorburn, who was vicar at Saint Paul’s in the late 1980s.

The cost of the weekend has been cut this year!  Booking forms are now available in church.

Speak to Greta or Marion for more information.

It is our intention that no-one should feel prevented from attending on cost grounds.  If you would like to attend, but feel cost would be an issue, please don’t hesitate to speak to Greta, Marion or Jim.

Beyond Ourselves

A course for adults preparing for Confirmation, or anyone wishing to refresh their understanding of the Christian faith.

Wednesday evenings, 7:30pm to 9pm, at 76 Tyninghame Avenue, Claregate.  The introductory evening  is this Wednesday (9th Jan).

Led by Jim, Liz Rathbone and others.

For more information, or to discuss Confirmation, please speak to Jim.

Prayers to share

The following prayers were discovered by Linzee Perry during the Advent Quiet Day at St Chad’s, Bonningale (organised by Liz Rathbone and Martin Bristow).  They are from the book produced by the Community of Saint Chad, a new idea developed by our Diocese, welcoming “any Christian who longs to grow in depth of discipleship and who is prepared to journey with others in a quest of a life-changing faith”.

Loving God,
give me the courage to face the things
which make me afraid,
and strength to overcome temptation.

Turn that which is evil in me into good
and that which is good into that which is better;
turn my mourning into joy,
my wandering feet into the right path,
my ignorance into knowledge of your truth
my lukewarmedness into zeal,
my fear into love,
all my material good into a spiritual gift,
all my earthly desires into heavenly,
all that is transient into that which lasts forever.

Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471)

Grant me the spirit of love
that does not want to be rewarded,
honoured or esteemed,
but only to become the blessing and happiness
of everything that wants it;
love which is the very joy of life,
and your own goodness and truth within the soul.

William Law 1686-1761
